Diagnosis
- Fortunately, the symptoms of blindness happen almost immediately
- Blockage of central retina would stop retina working within a few seconds
- The above can be likened to disturbed vision when you stand too quickly
- Delayed diagnosis is common, the best chance of reversal is when the occlusion is treated within 90 minutes of it happening.
- Other medical conditions to be considered should be stroke, haematoma onto the eye, blocked venous or arterial blood supply, damage to the optic tract
- Emboli may take a while to travel to the final vessel which will ultimately affect the sight, in this case we must be aware that delayed onset is possible at around a few hours
- The above will be the same for partial blockages
